Voice Class- Ages 5-9

Do you have a child who sings constantly, often to the same songs over and over again?  Do you hear them singing themselves to sleep or possibly dancing around while singing with a pretend microphone in their hands?  Perhaps, you have a child who loves to sing but does not want to sing in front of others and needs encouragement?  Would you like to nurture their love of music but are unsure of where to start?  This class is the perfect place to start!

I have been singing for over 20 years and teaching is my greatest joy especially when it comes to fostering a love of music in children.  Not only is it beneficial for their physical, mental and emotional development, but it encourages creativity and confidence!  As a shy child, music helped me break out of my shell and gain self-esteem.  I could be whoever I wanted when I was singing, and that was music’s greatest gift to me!  Perhaps your child is like me or perhaps they have no problem singing in front of whoever will listen!  Either way, this class will give them the foundation they need to begin!

What will we be doing in this class?  Singing, singing and then singing again!  We will learn a new song every day with new activities to learn a specific skill about music and healthy singing technique.  One day we will be marching around the room singing Frère Jacques to focus on beat and rhythm, then the next we will be trying to sing into straws to work on breath control.  They won’t know this, but they don’t have to know exactly why we are doing what we are doing because all they need to do is have fun.  Learning will follow!

A love of singing is wonderful and childhood is the best time to begin learning the language of music.  Come sing with us!

Adult Voice Class- Ages 18-118

I have taught voice for years, and I can say people want to sing for many reasons.  Some want to sing on Broadway one day while others just want to sing a song or two on karaoke night.  Some want to sing something special for their loved one on their wedding day and some are just trying to move past a personal fear or phobia.  I have taught a dad who wanted to feel comfortable singing and playing guitar in front of his children and a professor who wanted to learn to project his voice for public speaking.  There is no one reason to want to learn how to sing, but everyone can!  I have seen it happen time and time again.

I know.  I am sure you have heard that statement before and are probably thinking that you are the least musical person you know.  Perhaps, you have even been told at some point by someone that you cannot sing.  I am here to tell you that this is simply not true.  As a child, I was excessively shy.  I knew I loved to sing, but I struggled for years with confidence and stage fright.  I had to force myself to audition for solos in choir or for a musical.  It was painful, but I learned something that I would like to share with you.  Singing is a skill, not a talent.  It requires dedication and hard work, but it can be learned and it is fun!  I am proof of that.

So you know you want to sing, but how do you start?  Private lessons are an option, but you may decide you are not ready for that just yet.  This class is a great first step because you will learn side by side with others who share that same fears and nerves as you do.  We will cover the basics of healthy technique such as how to breathe and how to project your voice.  We will discover the difference between chest and head voice and how to move between them.  What is a glottal and how will it help my singing?  I will show you!  Have you ever thought you couldn’t sing an art song in Italian?  You will!  And you will learn so much about your voice by doing it.   We can then take those skills to more contemporary songs if that is your pleasure!  With these basics, you can have fun singing whenever and whatever you like.

Singing and teaching is my greatest joy and my life’s work, and I would love to help you begin your own journey.  Come take that first step!
